The mighty Avett Brothers have joined forces with Mike Patton for a new album performing as AVTT/PTTN, and the new album will also be called “AVTT/PTTN”, and it’s due out on November 14th via Thirty Tigers, Ramseur Records, and Ipecac Recordings.
In what could be described as one of the year’s most surprising collaborations, Scott and Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers have teamed up with Mike Patton, frontman of Faith No More and Mr Bungle, to form the new band whose name derives from their combined names sans vowels, so to speak. Their new album of original songs was written by the three artists together and produced by Patton, Scott Avett, and Grammy-winning engineer Dana Nielsen (Metallica, Rihanna), and the first single, ‘Eternal Love’, is available now.
The backstory is that what began as a casual exchange of admiration soon grew into a genuine creative partnership. The Avetts and Patton, longtime mutual fans, found themselves trading songs and ideas across coasts, with each sketch evolving as it passed through the trio’s hands. “This is what art is,” Scott reflects. “This is what making is supposed to be: in secret and with no ambition.”
For the Avetts, working with Patton was more than just a new collaboration — it was a full-circle moment. “Mike’s part of our DNA, like the fabric of our youth,” says Scott. “Literally, we studied him. He’s a dear friend now, but when we were younger, I was imitating him.” Patton adds, “My peculiar challenge in this was to become a long-distance cousin. A brother that was orphaned. Maybe they kept him in the chicken coop or some shit. They brought him out years and years later.”
