Classic Clips: Elvis Costello “Cowgirl in the Sand” Queen Elizabeth Theater, Vancouver, 2010

Costello and Young have got history through the former’s appearances at the latter’s Bridge concerts even appearing on stage together to rip up ‘Down By The River’ which can be found on YouTube too but for the purposes of this particular column I’ve chosen Elvis’s ripping version of ‘Cowgirl In The Sand’. If you’re expecting him to cover it a la ‘Good Year For The Roses’ all mournful and pining you’re going to be disappointed as this is a full on, ragged explosion of a cover. Costello take the lyricism and twists the guitar in a way not normally associated with his usually buttoned down approach and it is a blinder. Enjoy.
