Classic Clips: Junior Brown “Another Honky Tonk Burned Down” live session at the Continental Gallery, Austin, Texas

Junior Brown is usually to be found playing his unique and iconic ‘guit-steel’ guitar, a double necked instrument that combines electric guitar with lap steel guitar.  However on this clip he is playing an acoustic guitar and as you will see he’s no slouch on that either. The clip was recorded at the Continental Gallery, housed within the famous Austin venue and was sponsored by a local guitar company.  Brown is in superb voice on this performance surrounded by a great acoustic band that includes his wife Tanya Rae Brown on acoustic rhythm guitar. If anyone missed the couple’s live from home lockdown shows during the pandemic you really need to catch-up with them. For me they were amongst the best of the very many similar shows that were being put out by a wide range of artists at that time.

The song performed in this clip is ‘Another Honky Tonk Burned Down’  taken from Brown’s 2018 album ‘Deep in the Heart of Me’. The album version is a slower paced country song. This speeded up acoustic version injects a bit more energy and edge and just shades out the very good recorded version. Above all else though it highlights just what a talented, writer, player and performer Junior Brown is.

From buying my first record aged 10 and attending my first gig at 14, music has been a lifelong obsession. A proud native of Suffolk, I have lived in and around Manchester for the best part of 30 years. My idea of a perfect day would be a new record arriving in the post in the morning, watching Ipswich Town win in the afternoon followed by a gig and a pint with my mates at night,
