I long for us to have leadership of the same calibre as Spain's PM Pedro Sánchez. A really good piece in the Guardian today on him. He's been outstanding in recent weeks.

“It is naive to believe that democracies or respect between nations can spring from ruins. Or to think that practising blind and servile obedience is a form of leadership … We will not be complicit in something that is bad for the world and that is also contrary to our values and interests, simply out of fear of reprisals from someone.” Can you imagine Starmer (or anyone in the current government) saying this!

What’s that saying, Mark? Hope springs eternal. I believe the UK electorate will take a long time to move in this direction, and that requires politicians who have the policies and are able to pitch them effectively and then can deliver them. The country is a long way from this point.

My tried and trusted tactic of shouting "FUCK OFF!" at the television whilst I indulge my unhealthy obsession of cruising the tv news channels still isn't working, sadly. Maybe I should change tack...

It certainly couldn’t make things worse, Paul. I have a feeling we could end up moving to proportional representation as no party manages to gain an overall mandate at the general election.

I reckon that first past the post will be the standard for some time given the craven addiction to power exhibited by Labour and the Tories (despite their current woes). However, I agree that a reset is to wished for.
