Cool Ghouls “Helpless Circumstance” – Listen

How to define San Francisco’s Cool Ghouls?  Well, there’s a clue in the picture – that’s the band, in their studio and the studio is in…. a garage.  Yes indeed, the Cool Ghouls play homage to that classic rough around the edges garage rock band sound on ‘Helpless Circumstance‘ which is taken from their new album ‘At George’s Zoo.’  All the elements are there – rising vocals, chugging insistent guitar and a bass line that rumbles with menace whilst the drums and percussion add the beat and sparkle.   Because this is more than homage – this is music of merit in its own right.

Having been playing together for ten years, Cool Ghouls made the smart move of putting their fourth album together before the pandemic hit – this is no quick fill acoustic home recording, but a full band in the studio (in the garage) effort, and it sounds all the better for that.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
