Father John Misty “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All” – or grants wisdom, maybe

What a ride it’s been for Father John Misty, who on July 31st digitally released via Bella Union ‘Greatish Hits: I Followed My Dreams and My Dreams Said To Crawl‘ from which the new song ‘I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All‘ is taken.  It collects prime cuts from Father John Misty’s five acclaimed albums, including Fear Fun (2012), I Love You, Honeybear (2015), the Grammy-nominated Pure Comedy (2017), God’s Favorite Customer (2018), and Chloë and The Next 20th Century (2022).  And a couple of non-album songs, like this one which is a brand new greatest hit.  That’s how things are now.   It does include ‘Mister Tillman‘, a nod if you like to the time when Father John Misty was, indeed, Josh Tillman – singer-songwriter and drummer with Fleet Foxes.

That’s where, incidentally, this writer first encountered him – memorably being ignored opening for the band, whilst this writer suggested to those around him that they might actually like to shut up for a minute because the support act was in fact part of the band everyone had come to see and so might be worthy of a little attention.  And, he was.  But wisely he also got fed up with the rather ironic if unamusing situation he’d found himself in and reinvented himself as the coolest psychedelic ironist in the room.  And, as this new album proves, he was right to do so.  God knows where he’d be if this writer had actually got everyone to shut the fuck up and listen.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
