Kim Moberg “I’ll Always Be A Friend” – don’tcha know you… umm… gotta pal

Her last album, 2023’s “The Seven Fires Prophecy: A Suite for Humanity”, was a favourite, so it’s a true pleasure to have new music from Cape Cod, MA-based Indigenous folk singer-songwriter Kim Moberg. On “All That Really Matters”, her new album, she goes back to singer-songwriter inspirations, and in particular, on today’s song, there’s a hat-tip to Carol King. As Moberg explains: “As an artist who grew up listening to the amazing singer-songwriters of the 1970s, Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend’ is embedded in my heart. I love that her song and its message about connection, support and loyalty have endured all of these many years.

And whilst there are, perhaps inevitably, echoes of King’s song, there is an additional message that Moberg would like to convey, and that is one of a more global friendship. Expanding on that theme, Moberg has said: “‘I’ll Always Be A Friend’ was born from my desire to share how important the friends in my life have been and how equally important the new friends I get to connect with through performing are to me. In these uncertain and trying times, community and friendship are paramount.” And if that sounds like hippy optimism, well, maybe there’s a lot to be said for hippy optimism in the face of relentless rage and division. We do have a choice, you dig?

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
