Remedy Tree is that relatively rare thing: a Florida-based Americana band rooted in bluegrass, old-time, and folk traditions. And today’s song sees them leaning into the bluegrass side of the band, which was founded in 2015 by Gabriel and Abigail Acevedo. The group blends Gabriel’s unique perspective- born in Puerto Rico and raised in rural Florida- with Abigail’s deep old-time background. With multi-instrumentalist Nathan Beaumont on mandolin and Isaac Taylor on banjo, they create new music that sounds familiar in feel but maybe takes something of a different, somewhat freer, perspective in the lyrics.
Point in case is today’s Exhibit A, which tells the story of a man who loses the woman he loves along the Charlton County line. With an acorn placed in her hand, she is laid to rest, and from her grave a tree eventually grows. Years later, when the wind moves through its branches, the tree seems to cry out each time the train rolls south toward Folkston. Co-written by Adam Haynes and Gabriel Acevedo, the latter says, “I love what a spur-of-the-moment writing session can create. I’ve always been fascinated with the thought of what an old tree has witnessed. There’s a magic underneath a several-hundred-year-old oak tree that can’t be fully explained. I think Train to Folkston captures that feeling,” whilst Adam Hayes adds, “Two writers, one idea, and a few hours of imagination—that’s the magic of a songwriter workshop. Somehow, an acorn became a tree, and a story became a song. Great job giving this song life!”
Train To Folkston is taken from the upcoming release Into The Light, and features Gabriel Acevedo on lead vocals and guitar, Abigail Acevedo on bass and harmony vocals, Nathan Beaumont on mandolin and harmony vocals, Isaac Taylor on banjo, and Jeff Partin on dobro.
