Sean Devine “Feelin’ Like An Old Piece Of Wood” – Listen

Sean Devine’s voice sounds cracked and worn, as if it has itself been carved from an old battered timber, making it the perfect vehicle for today’s song taken from Devine’s new album ‘Here for It All‘, his fourth full-length release.  ‘Feelin’ like an old Piece of Wood‘  has a strong sense of place – albeit it’s a blasted landscape in desperate need of rain.  It’s a bleakness which mirrors the protagonist’s outlook – worn down and battered but, somehow, unable to leave under his own volition.

Sean Devine channels his own experiences of hard knock-backs through this song and the others on the new album, saying “‘Here for It All’ means being here for the inevitable heartbreaks and the sorrow that will come with life, no matter what.  You’re not going to avoid it – and you’re not going to hide from it. You have to be in this with your whole heart, right? It’s that feeling of staying open and taking the risks that really matter.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
