Sounds from beyond the Shed 193 “Carpe Diem”

As one of the news editors of this august body, lots of stories come across my desk (well, it’s more of a collection of bits of wood and paper that may have a structure, but I’m afraid to move anything major to find out..), and one of those more recently was the announcement of the some live gigs fror the ‘legendaryTerry Reid back in May I’ve always been a fan, not a massive one, but one that was pleased to see a new release and give it a listen whenever one hoved into view. His spots on the Old Grey Whistle Test were my first introduction, and his album produced by Graham Nash is a personal favourite and career highlight. It was only later that I learned of the apocryphal Led Zeppelin back story. Would they have been a good match? I’m not sure.

Back to the story, so it was with great pleasure that I put the story together about his upcoming tour. I even looked at going, knowing they would be intimate gigs involving a lot of chat from the stage. When the tour was postponed a couple of months later, I was disappointed but thought little of it, so the news today of his passing was not only very sad but also a little shocking. I do hope his passing was peaceful. But what a life, filled with extraordinary moments and people. I hope he felt blessed and proud of his musical legacy.

And, as ever, in these moments, thoughts turn to self and those around. My father, of whom I have written before now, resides physically in a care home and mentally somewhere in the labyrinth of his ravaged mind. I content myself with knowing that he was very proud of his life works – family, friends, and career. He hasn’t gone, but the grieving began a while ago. Myself, I’m going to wring the life out of every moment of every day. The occasional glance back tells me that life has been very kind to me and mine, and I intend to pass that kindness on – in spades, for as long as I can.

Thank you, Terry.

One track from Ried’s OGWT legacy, and something brand new as we look forward from Laney Jones and the Spirits. The radio show features lots of lovely stuff, including the aforementioned Jones as well as some Night Flight, Penny Rebels, Ron Pope, Patty Griffin, My Girl The River, and more. As ever….
