Track Premiere: 3 Pairs Of Boots “Reno”

This latest single from North Californian band 3 Pairs of Boots is a little different from their previously featured songs. 3 Pairs Of Boots (and we’ve never been able to ascertain who has the most boots, it probably isn’t important) are Andrew Stern and Laura Arias – they met and married within a year, and had both previously tried music in a range of genres.  Together they settled on a blend of folk, rock, and country (hey, is that Americana?) taking inspiration from Fleetwood Mac, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, The Byrds as well as country icons such as Johnny Cash and Shania Twain.

This song selection is from the upcoming ‘Boot Scootin’ ‘ album, out September 27th.  Speaking of the song Andrew Stern has said that he was “Inspired by Laura’s lyrics of “round and round we go…”, I wanted to create a hypnotic non-stop motion song that kept going round and round, weaving guitar and keyboard melodies thru the song to mark the verse, chorus, & interlude sections, Dave Cohen on keys sent me this beautiful Viking horn patch track  … …and as I honed in on the music the idea of big John Bonham style drumming lept to the forefront, there were a lot of puzzle pieces here, took awhile to figure what to use, what not to use, how they fit together, when they should came in and out, I owe a big debt of gratitude to the great Eddie Caipo who mixed and edited this track.

Laura Arias’ take on the song is that ” ‘Reno’ wrote itself pretty much, and I scribbled out the lyrics in chronological order which isn’t always the case, it just worked out that way this time. Also, I recall that Andrew pared down the lyrics slightly, and he definitely veered away from my original composition, and rearranged it –for the better. He also experienced minor torture during the production; that happens sometimes when he’s producing and hunting for just the perfect treatment, and I think that’s because he’s always reaching for the stars, reinventing and soul searching when he’s creating in the studio.  He has the ability to be hyper-focused when he’s in work mode, it’s almost zen like, maybe with a few explosions thrown in. In the end he really surprised me with a very thoughtful and atmospheric track, I love it.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
