Vashti Bunyan & Devendra Banhart: “How Could You Let Me Go” – how indeed?

This song by Vashti Bunyan & Devendra Banhart is a cover of the Madelynn Von Ritz (aka Lynn Castle) song ‘How Could You Let Me Go.’  And it’s something special.  Where’s this come from, you ask?  It’s from the soon to be released 20-track collection ‘Light in the Attic & Friends‘, which presents over a decade’s worth of inspired performances from the celebrated label’s acclaimed Covers Series.

For the storied label, reviving long-out-of-print recordings is only half of the process. “We believe that an essential component of archival work, aside from simply honouring the music, is to seek ways in which to bring fresh perspectives, context, and reverence to the original artists and their work,” says Light In The Attic Founder and Co-Owner, Matt Sullivan. Thus, the acclaimed 7” vinyl and digital singles Cover Series was born, in which contemporary acts pay homage to their favourite artists and songs. Spanning more than a decade, a handful of these sought-after recordings have previously been issued as limited-edition 45s, while eleven of the tracks are brand-new recordings. Now, all twenty of these inspired tributes will be available together for the very first time as a digital collection and special limited-edition 2-LP set, titled ‘Light in the Attic & Friends’ ‒ being released exclusively for Record Store Day’s annual Black Friday event, taking place on November 24th at participating independent retailers.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
