Check out the latest single from Maltese folk artist Alexandra Alden. “Magnolia” is arranged beautifully and showcases Alden’s engaging, melodic voice. Directed, animated and edited by Gideon van der Stelt, the video is an artfully-produced visual that combines clever animation, Alden performing and choreography by Paolo Mangiola for ZfinMalta National Dance Company. Malta’s Museum of Archaeology is used as a location and provides a gorgeous backdrop for a timeless song. There’s an elegant look to the video that matches the way that Alden sings and plays – her vocals are clear and pure, delivered with grace and poise. Lyrically, Alden writes with an introspective, poetic style; the image of the magnolia flower, which blooms before its protective leaves appear, symbolises beauty breaking through and facing the unknown with fragile determination, vulnerable and yet resilient.
The single is from “When Is Too Late?”, Alden’s upcoming album, which is due out on 10th October 2025. Alden reflects on her musical journey thus far: “For a while, my self-esteem had eroded so far that I was becoming a stranger to myself for many reasons. I spent time away in the Austrian mountains, contemplating a different life altogether from that of making music. But in the end, I found myself on the road again, playing tiny shows in Italian villages, rediscovering the magic of connection and the joy of doing what I love. That sense of movement, of longing, of finding beauty in the in-between, runs through this album. I returned home knowing I needed to make changes, even though the idea of that scared me and I didn’t realise how challenging it would be to take the leap of faith that I so needed to take.” Alden’s distinctive sound reflects her multi-cultural heritage, drawing on British and American folk influences and Mediterranean warmth. Enjoy.
