Video: Black Deer Festival – Roseanne Reid

For today’s video, we’re shining a light on one of the artists to look forward to at Black Deer Festival this coming weekend.  Roseanne Reid possesses a wonderfully characterful voice, used to great effect on her latest single alongside the warm harmony vocals of Edinburgh-musician Rory Butler.  Reid says of the song: “‘All I Need’ comes from a place of vulnerability, but also acceptance and gratitude. It explores the parts of a personality that stay mainly hidden from the world, opening them up and offering them to the person you trust most to hold.”  That sense of vulnerability comes across in her engaging delivery and emotive lyrics.

This single is the opening track from Reid’s brand new album, ‘Lawside’, which is out now.  It’s named after the the area of Dundee in which Reid lives with her family as she explains: “Someone said to me the other day that ‘Lawside’ almost sounds like a country and western title.  Most of the songs were written here, and it just felt right to mark that, and group them together for where they were written.”  Last year, Reid and her wife became parents to a baby boy and life has moved on in many ways since her acclaimed debut album, ‘Trails’.  She says: “This album just sounds much more self-assured throughout.  I’ve been a bit bolder with the vocals. With ‘Trails’, they were blended a bit more, and this time they’re front and centre. I’d say ‘Trails’ was perfect for where I was at the time, but with this record, I feel that bit more confident with my voice. It’s gotten stronger over time, and I thought ‘Let’s push that right up front.'”  Indeed, her vocal performance is notable but also her songcraft is outstanding on the new album.

The Scottish singer-songwriter is in the middle of a UK and Ireland tour supporting the legendary Steve Earle to promote the record.  Along the way, she’ll be performing at Black Deer on 18th June, with further festival appearances this summer at Folk in The Park on 19th August and Long Road Festival on 25th August.  Reid is a captivating live performer and her shows come highly recommended.  In the meantime, ‘All I Need’ is a great introduction to the new album.

Look out for Roseanne on the SupaJam Stage on Sunday at Black Deer.
