In their new video for ‘Harness the Wind’ Calexico continues their psychedelic journey through the American Southwest. Returning to the animated world seen in the previous video for ‘El Mirador’, their newest single explores sunnier themes of love and redemption. Viewers are introduced to the main character as she flies across the desert sky in a sailbarge. Trouble ensues and she finds herself falling to earth but a saviour awaits. In the final frames we see the silhouette of the ‘El Mirador’ tower in the distance.
Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino have been performing together for over 30 years, sharing a deep love of jazz and usually building songs on a foundation of bass and drums. ‘Harness the Wind’ is the second single from the ‘El Mirador’ album which will be released on April 8th via City Slang.
The album was written and recorded during the long months of pandemic lockdown at collaborator Sergio Mendoza’s studio.
“I’ve been playing with Calexico for about 15 years, and I admire Joey and John’s constant search for new sounds,” reflects Mendoza, whose newly built home studio became a refuge for the band and reduced pandemic risks while fostering a more organic creative process. “After so many albums,” he adds, “I’m really proud we were able to achieve something so fresh together.”
The band is touring in support of the new record with a headlining show in London at the 02 Kentish Town Forum on May 14th.
