Video: Courtney Marie Andrews “Ships in the Night”

Courtney Marie Andrews released a devastatingly personal album this year, ‘Old Flowers’, which is nominated for Best Americana Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards.  After the end of a long-term relationship, Andrews put out a set of songs full of raw, complex and conflicting emotion.  ‘Ships in the Night’ is one of its most intimate and revealing songs.  It feels full of resignation, a reluctant acceptance and finds Andrews ready to move on.  Just.  It’s disarmingly and straightforwardly honest: “I know you tried to reach me, // I know you tried // I know we felt the same way // but the timing wasn’t right.”

Part of Andrews’ talent is making these self-portraits universally-recognised pictures of human experience.  Anyone who has seen Andrews perform live knows that she’s a powerful performer.  The video for ‘Ships in the Night’ is a live performance video, recorded at The Parthenon in Nashville, and the vocal is suitably impassioned and emotional.  It’s been another outstanding year for Andrews, who has also received two nominations for the Americana Music Association UK Awards. Check out this great song from one of the most gifted artists around today.
