Here’s the latest single from Catskills-based singer-songwriter Hannah Cohen. Central to ‘Mountain’ is Cohen’s gorgeous vocal delivery – it’s timeless, graceful, pure and sweetly melodic. Most striking are Cohen’s poetic lyrics that meditate on feelings of loss: “Losing you is a mountain of stillness // distant star flashes your mischief // a nasty thought rises and I fell sick // I won’t ask questions, forgiveness // I’ll just play it on over and over again // a love like that won’t ever end // we could be like this or that instead // I miss you bad I miss my friend.” The recording benefits from the contributions of some fine musicians: Sam Evian on guitar, Meg Lui providing harmony vocals, Núria Graham on bass, Santiago Mijares on acoustic guitar and Sean Mullins on drums. Evian’s guitar is particularly impressive, the sustained notes of his slide guitar solo hanging in the air and rising to the heavens.
Earlier this year, Cohen released the album “Earthstar Mountain” to critical acclaim. The album was described as her love letter to the Catskill Mountains and explored the connection between her past, present, future, and alternate selves, alongside relationships with friends, all under the shadow of the mountain outside her window. The songs are smart, lyrical, melodic and superbly crafted. Now, she has announced the release of ‘Flying Cloud Tapes’, a collection of live performances filmed at her home in the Catskills Mountains of New York and at Flying Cloud Studios, where the album was recorded. Flying High Studios is an analogue studio in the mountains, which is owned and operated by Cohen and producer/engineer Sam Evian. The studio is like a retreat and appeals to artists like Big Thief and Sufjan Stevens, who have recorded there. Hidden in a mountain hollow, deep in woodland and surrounded by streams, meadows and trees, the studio is a calm, reflective space that frees the creative spirit.
The release of ‘Mountain’ follows previous single ‘Summer Sweat’, which was named one of Spotify’s Songs of Summer and has been streamed on the platform almost 13 million times. ‘Mountain’ also features in the box office hit film ‘Regretting You’, further increasing Cohen’s profile.
