Video Interview: Eden Brent on “Gateway Blues”

Authentic American roots music from a Mississippi Delta native.

Born into a family of Mississippi riverboat captains and musicians, and who just happens to be married to an English musician, vocalist and pianist Eden Brent has broken a ten-year silence, if you ignore a Christmas album in 2018, with the release of “Gateway Blues” which she recorded in London. She has developed her career and won various awards while still living in her home town of Greenville, Mississippi.  Eden Brent is more than simply a piano player who has won the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player Of The Year multiple times, her vocals have the grit and sweet molasses sound that comes from being brought up and living in the Mississippi Delta, and her songwriting reflects her up bring and wider influences. Americana UK’s Martin Johnson caught up with Eden Brent at home in Mississippi over Zoom as she was doing her best to deal with the oppressive summer heat, to discuss “Gateway Blues. Eden Brent makes it very clear that she sees herself as an American roots music artist, who has deep family roots in Mississippi. The UK is also important to her as the home country of her husband, Bob Dowell. She also shares a little anecdote about how her family acquired Jerry Lee Lewis’s hi-fi when it was part of an auction to pay off his IRS debt, something that could only happen in Mississippi.

Eden Brent’s “Gateway Blues” is out now on Yellow Dog Records.

I've been a music obsessive for more years than I care to admit to. Part of my enjoyment from music comes from discovering new sounds and artists while continuing to explore the roots of American 20th century music that has impacted the whole of world culture.
