Video Interview: Jamie Sutherland on “The World As It Used To Be”

Writing more songs than Broken Records can record and the pull of singer-songwriters.

It may surprise many listeners that Broken Records’ Jamie Sutherland is seventeen years into his career, mind you, this doesn’t mean he is slowing down as has not only his band responsibilities but also a solo career and management roles in a couple of Scottish arts organisations. Americana UK’s Martin Johnson caught up with him at home in the Scottish Highlands to discuss his latest solo album, “The World As It Used To Be”, and what his solo career means to him. He explains that he’s a serial songwriter and that not every song is appropriate for Broken Records, and that the songs were originally recorded in singer-songwriter mod and he then brought his bandmates in to add extra bits and pieces. While the latest Broken Records album “The Dreamless Sleep Of The 1990s” was released in late 2023, his solo album was started in 2021, and the pandemic helped him add to his stock of songs. He shares that writing as a singer-songwriter means that you only have to concentrate on writing the best songs you can, and you don’t have to worry about reinventing the wheel which isn’t the case with Broken Records because of their legacy. As he has got older and gained more family responsibilities, Jamie Sutherland says he is more appreciative of his musical activities than he was in his ‘20s because time is now more precious because of the competing demands on it.

Jamie Sutherland’s “The World As It Used To Be” is out now on Frictionless Music.

I've been a music obsessive for more years than I care to admit to. Part of my enjoyment from music comes from discovering new sounds and artists while continuing to explore the roots of American 20th century music that has impacted the whole of world culture.
