Here’s the latest single from the outstanding collaboration between Julien Baker and TORRES. “Sylvia” is a beautifully-crafted country song, featuring poignant lyrics, yearning vocals and gorgeous pedal steel. The pair deliver melodies and harmonies that seep into your heart and soul. It’s reflective, graceful music that lifts and remains with you. The personal words ache with real feeling that we can all relate to: “Tomorrow, today’s worries might turn out to be regrets // Tomorrow, yesterday’s glories will be a memory.”
TORRES says, “The morning I went to pick up my dog Sylvia from an upstate shelter, I was at home making my coffee and I turned on WFMU and Dolly Parton’s ‘Cracker Jack’ was on. I burst into tears—it felt like the universe was telling me she was going to be mine (Sylvia was only meant to be a foster). I remember thinking that I’d love to write a song like that, a song that people could feel in their chest within five seconds of turning on the radio, because anyone who has ever had the honour of sharing a home with a beloved pet knows that a pet is family—they’re the best friends you could ever have.”
Mackenzie Scott has been releasing albums under the pseudonym of TORRES since 2013. On her sixth release in 2022, “What an enormous room”, multi-instrumentalist TORRES played guitar, bass, synths and piano as well as vocals. Meanwhile, Baker has released music to great acclaim, both solo and with her GRAMMY Award-winning trio boygenius alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. TORRES and Baker together is a collaboration full of promise.
With the single comes the announcement of an album from the pair, “Send a Prayer My Way”, which will be released on 18th April. After their first show together in 2016, one singer turned to the other and said, “You know, we should make a country album,” and this new collection is the result. Enjoy.
