Video: Michael Robert Murphy “Prometheus Fountain”

Check out this solo single from Liverpool’s Michael Robert Murphy, former frontman of Wicked Whispers.  ‘Prometheus Fountain’, featuring The Coral’s Paul Molloy, is an absorbing song featuring bright instrumentation that raises up Murphy’s dreamy, melodic vocal and sounds perfect for a soundtrack to your summer days.  Towards the end, an excellent guitar solo reinforces the mood.  In the accompanying video, directed and shot by Brad Wagner, we find Murphy walking the streets of New York City – it’s an atmospheric, artfully created and edited visual.

The single will appear on the forthcoming album “Chaos Magick“, which will arrive on 6th June 2025.  Murphy says of the album and song: “‘Chaos Magick’ is a very personal and autobiographic album, and ‘Prometheus Fountain’ is a song dedicated to and inspired to my late mum who was the last of my blood family when she passed a few years ago. We were incredibly close, and it broke my heart. This song relates to a time when she, although not having much money, saved and took me to New York for my 18th birthday. One of our favourite films we’d always watch together when I was little was Home Alone 2, so when I think back to that time, I think of us visiting places like Rockefeller Plaza and when I want to see her again I always imagine meeting her at that fountain.”  It’s sensitive, heartfelt stuff that sweeps you along in Murphy’s sonic reflections and rememberings.  He also describes the album’s distinctive sound as, “…a scouse lo-fi autobiographical psychedelic odyssey,” which is a wonderfully vivid description.

Murphy will be playing shows in Glasgow and at Future Yard in Birkenhead – which will be a homecoming album launch show.  You can find tickets here.  Of the homecoming gig, he says: “I’m thrilled to be hosting the album launch show at Future Yard. It’s an incredible venue with a serious community mission, but also has one of the best stage sounds in the area. We also choose here as my debut record was recorded this side of the Mersey in nearby Raby, and with some VERY special guests to appear who were involved in the making of the record, it seemed the ideal place to host the launch.”  Something to look forward to for music lovers in Merseyside.  In the meantime, absorb this engrossing single.
