Actress Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, The Book of Boba Fett) finds herself searching for clues among conspiracies in the latest video from Pavement. ‘Harness Your Hopes’ is a B-side from 1999 that is being re-released after finding a new lease on life on TikTok. What was a throwaway line 23 years ago, “The freaks have stormed the White House” seems to have prescient relevance and captured the imagination of a new generation of listeners/dancers on the ubiquitous app.
The song is drawn from the re-release of the ‘Spit on a Stranger’ E.P from Matador Records that will hit stores on 12 inch vinyl on April 8, 2022. The video, directed by Alex Ross Perry, is a mini-history of the band as Thatcher is seen spliced into footage from several of their classic music videos.
Pavement are Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West. Among the most beloved acts to come out of the American underground in the 1990’s, the band released era-defining albums such as – ‘Slanted And Enchanted’ (1992), and ‘Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain’ (1994) before disbanding in 1999. Pavement’s 2010 reunion saw them play four sold-out shows in Central Park and top the bills of festivals worldwide including Coachella, Primavera Sound, and Pitchfork.
Pavement headline Primavera Sound in Barcelona and NOS Primavera Sound in Porto. The band play UK, European and North American reunion shows this autumn, including a five night run at the Roundhouse in London.
