The new single from Dan Whitaker is about that familiar conflict between wanting freedom but also seeking the reassurance of love, attachment and commitment. In this story of self-defeat, the main protagonist is the one who pushes his love away. ‘One More Story Told’ benefits from Whitaker’s excellent vocal range and well-crafted melody, which rises above absorbing pedal steel and a strong rhythm section. The video features Whitaker sitting alone at the bar in a literal representation of the lonesome storyline. It’s a fine song that has the feel of classic country performed engagingly well.
For thirty years, up to 2015, Dan Whitaker was involved in roots rock and honky-tonk bands, most notably The Shinebenders. ‘One More Story Told’ is the title track from Whitaker’s forthcoming anthology of songs, due out on 13th August, which re-interprets songs from his musical past for a newer audience. These new versions follow a more stripped back, acoustic path, showcasing a different side to both the songs and Whitaker as a performer. He explains: “I hope people see me for what I am, as a full artist. There are a lot of sides to my music and I hope my audience appreciates the change of scenery.” Conceived as a lockdown project to help Whitaker reconnect with his audience, the album will be the Chicago singer-songwriter’s 13th. With further records on the way, including a country-jazz album, Whitaker seems intent on demonstrating his considerable talents across a range of genres. Check it out.
