Video Premiere: ISYLA “The Only Girl in the Room”

Here is the achingly gorgeous and heartfelt video premiere of ‘The Only Girl in the Room’ by outstanding Cornish duo ISYLA.  A lovely vocal melody rises and falls, floating over rolling piano and warm upright bass.  The combination is entrancing.

Singer Lizzie Freeborn and songwriter Amy Woodburn joined forces last year to create music that raised awareness of climate change.  Their well-received debut album as ISYLA, ‘Where she Walks’, appeared in the summer of 2020, championed by BBC Introducing.  The pair have worked with Earth Collective, Music Declares Emergency and a host of other like-minded organisations in an effort to promote real change.  Their songs have already featured on popular documentaries, such as ‘Cornwall’s Climate Stories – Plenty More Fish’.  Of course, it helps when songs like ‘The Only Girl in the Room’ display such fine songcraft and possess a rare and delicate beauty.

Their songwriting has continued to develop and, now, we can look forward to a second record.  ISYLA’s forthcoming album ‘Of Blood And Star’ features a host of quality musicians, including Lukas Drinkwater (Emily Barker), Rob Pemberton (The Staves), Evan Carson (Kate Rusby) and Kit Hawes (Seth Lakeman, Yola).   That sublime musicianship is on show here in this performance video, live from Cube Studios in Cornwall.    This song has been a strong feature of their live sets, always getting a positive reception from audiences.  Woodburn explains: “We had such a fantastic response from our live debut of ‘Only Girl in the Room’ at The ‘Bedford that we’ve decided to release an exclusive live video performance! This is the first taste of our upcoming album ‘Of Blood And Star’ and we cannot wait to share it with you.”

Check this out for a beautiful blend of voices and fine songwriting.  Be absorbed.
