Video Premiere: JEMS “The Weather”

Here’s the new single from talented folk trio JEMS.  ‘The Weather’ opens with gorgeous, warm instrumental layers, beautifully-produced and arranged, as their words resonate: “I’m surrounded by beauty and all I build here.”  The song tackles the uncertainty of life and relationships, reflecting on the resilience and inner-strength needed to weather life’s storms.  The lyrics were inspired by an intense dream and the ethereal  soundscape created is hugely evocative.  The trio’s voices blend and harmonise perfectly, creating what they call a ‘fourth voice’, which reflects a new perspective and the confluence of all their influences.  ‘The Weather’ really is vocally stunning, an artfully-crafted and compelling piece of work that swells and soars.

The band members say of the song: “This song has been a stand out from this collection of songs and we really wanted a music video to go with it.   As we were writing the song, we all visualised being in our own space, whether at home or in nature as forces attempt to upend our peace. We wanted to capture the vulnerability and struggle of weathering your personal storms. Gille Klabin, the director approached us with an idea to have us all in darkness, slowly revealing us in the light that mimicked a Doppler radar effect — we loved that the effect has a double meaning as a way of measuring and revealing the storm that is within us and outside of us.  We hope you enjoy the video!”

The director shares the concept behind the video: “With ‘The Weather’ video I tried to create something contained and layered that felt like the processing of the end of a relationship. The band didn’t want to be too literal with the lyrics, so I used nature as a growing force within the story of the video that developed and progressed with the song. We were very limited with our practical shoot so I leaned into 3D animation and visual effects to punctuate the stages of the song, and tried to make that punctuation flow with the swelling beauty of the song. In the same way as we process thoughts that then become our reality, I used the imagery of nature to swell from internalised feelings, to a force that changes the world around us.”

JEMS describe the songwriting session for ‘The Weather’ as therapeutic and that’s what it’s like to be a listener too.  The single features on the trio’s brand new sophomore album ‘Back Around’, which is out now.  Check it out – gorgeous music to dream away to.
