Here’s the video premiere of the gorgeous ‘A Lifetime’ from Québécois singer-songwriter Ryan Kennedy. Following the critical success of his first two albums, 2015’s ‘Home Fires’ and 2017’s ‘Love Is Gold’, Kennedy released a third record, ‘Libertine’, which blends Kennedy’s folk sound with a flavour of indie-pop. The end result is an excellent album, full of captivating melody and lush musical layers. Dimitri LeBel-Alexandre delivers accomplished guitar and pedal steel alongside François Lafontaine’s keys and Antoine Gratton’s string arrangements. The overall impact is of beautifully-crafted songs that are full of sonic richness and texture.
However, this video of ‘A Lifetime’ from David Paradis is an atmospheric stripped back version, featuring just Kennedy at the piano, placing all our attention on the quality of his voice and the engaging melody. It’s a genuinely intimate performance, in which Kennedy’s keys flow and his vocal is passionate and heartfelt, powerful yet vulnerable. The contrasting light and shadow in the video reinforce the mood of this sincere ballad.
Kennedy’s journey through music included being ‘discovered’ in the 2015 season of La Voix, before being invited to The Voice France. In 2018, his ‘Honest Song’ won the award for most popular French song in Quebec at the SOCAN Gala and it was also one of the five most played songs on Quebec radio stations in 2016 and 2017. Kennedy is a gifted songwriter and and singer and this unplugged version of ‘A Lifetime’ is a great place place to begin discovering his songs. Enjoy.
