Video: Shred Kelly “Roman Candle Eyes”

One of the stand-out albums of 2020 was the upbeat ‘Like a Rising Sun’ from folk-rock Canadian group Shred Kelly.  Now, we have a video to accompany the upbeat ‘Roman Candle Eyes’, which was one of the record’s highlights.  The song is typically Shred Kelly, full of catchy melody, energy and dynamic rhythm that makes you want to move.  The album, including this song, was mostly written in 2019 just after lead singers Tim Newton and Sage McBride had their first child.  This brought a new kind of joy into their music, which was balanced by familial loss shortly afterwards.

McBride says of this song: “Roman Candle Eyes was written when Tim and I welcomed our firstborn into the world.  When Tim peered into the eyes of Murphy for the first time he was inspired to write about the explosive feelings of joy as well as the revelations of a life forever changed.”

The tongue-in-cheek video, directed by Dylan Siggers and Newton, follows the singer through a dream in which he is chased by a giant teddy bear, menaced by eyeballs and has a collision with a car.  There are many quirky, humorous moments (look out for the baby’s face) and the result will make you smile.  We need more of this positive energy in the world right now.  Shred Kelly were recently nominated for Rock Artist of the Year at The 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards and are well-worth checking out.  Enjoy.
