Here’s the new single from popular UK Americana act, The Wandering Hearts. The trio – Chess Whiffin, Tara Wilcox and A.J. Dean – have twice topped the Americana/Country Chart in the UK and have been nominated for Album Of The Year at the UK Americana Awards. Last year’s full-length release, “Mother”, brought more acclaim for the band.
‘Teach Your Children’ features on the forthcoming new album “Déjà Vu (We Have All Been Here Before)”, a re-imagining of the classic 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album. Due out on 20th June 2025, the trio have worked on finding the balance between being reverential, paying homage to the original, and refreshing and reinventing these songs for a new audience. Singer and guitarist AJ Dean says: “The more we talked about it, the more the idea of doing it ourselves appealed. With a cover, you either have to do something so different that it becomes something new, or because you love it so much that you have to pay tribute. I think our version of ‘Déjà Vu’ is something in between.” The album will be played in full when the group embark on a tour this June.
The new version of ‘Teach Your Children’ benefits from some delightful flourishes on the keys from Doug Organ and a great gently-swaying rhythm thanks to drummer Garret Ray (Olivia Rodrigo, Sia). Most importantly, the blend of male and female voices works beautifully; the trio’s trademark harmonies are sweetly melodic, seemingly effortless and totally flawless.
Whiffen says of the song: “‘Teach Your Children’ felt like one of the more natural songs on the record when it came to figuring out parts and recording. We wanted to honour the original and not change a lot about it as it would already sound different by just adding female voices. The song has definitely taken on a new meaning for me since having kids, especially the last line of the chorus, ‘so just look at them and smile, and know they love you.’ Haha!” Enjoy this rendition of a classic song and then look out for the new record.
