We are pleased to share the debut single from Australian singer-songwriter Vanessa Jade. ‘The More I Lie’ is about Jade masking and then reclaiming her identity after a late autism/ADHD diagnosis; she manages to convey this with music that is infectiously melodic and joyful. The single was recorded by Nash Chambers in Nashville and features various guests, including Kasey (Nash’s brother), Rob McNelly on electric guitar and Jordie Lane and Clare Reynolds from Lollies. A light, rhythmic strum from Jade on the acoustic is the foundation for tuneful hooks on the electric guitar, over which Jade’s pure voice – perfect for roots music – explores a catchy melody.
The metaphorical, good-humoured video, filmed by Thom Davies, shares the song’s serious theme: the alien character that follows Jade represents what it’s like to mask and hide from one’s true self in a world built by and for neurotypical people. Accepting the ‘alien’ within yourself – reflected in the video’s quirky narrative – is an incredibly important message. Jade says of the video: “At the end, I stop running from it and we become friends and have a little dance at the end of the clip, which I thought was a beautiful way to show embracing yourself no matter how weird you are or alien in this case!”
Jade will be in Nashville this September to showcase at AmericanaFest (through Sounds Aus) before releasing a second single and EP in October. While over in the USA, she will continue to work with Nash Chambers on a full album release – look out for this in 2026. Influenced by the likes of Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin, Jade’s music combines elements of folk, alt-country, soul, blues, and americana to create an engaging blend and catchy sound. Enjoy.
