Video Premiere: Fathom Lane “The Lookout”

Here’s the new video from Twin Cities’ band Fathom Lane.  The video for ‘The lookout’ is a live ‘Welcome to the Goulson’s’ session, which finds the band in fine form, showcasing their excellent musicianship.  Everything in the song is built on the warmly melodic bass guitar from Paul Boblett, accompanied in the rhythm section by Alex Young’s hypnotic drums.  Lead guitarist Matt Patrick delivers an absorbing solo that really grows from the song and fits perfectly within the context of the melody and accompanying instrumentation.  Additional layers are provided by keys from Ashleigh Still, who also brings precise harmony vocals.  Led by lead singer, acoustic guitarist and songwriter Michael Ferrier, Fathom Lane blend alt-country, folk noir and bluesy rock to create a distinctive sound.  On ‘The Lookout’, there’s an edge to Ferrier’s moody blues and lyrics; he sings: “Where did you get that mouth // Who do you think you are // The fuck we talkin’ about // How did it get this far…Who are you when you’re alone // That’s who I want you to be.”

The song is from the band’s new album, ‘In the Driftless’, their first in six years and the follow-up to the well-received ‘ASILOMAR’.  There’s some gorgeous lap steel from Shane Akers, sweetly drifting through Ferrier’s finely-arranged songs on the record.  As well as covers of tracks by Mary Cutrufello and the legendary Tom Petty, the album features a collection of new songs that explore love, loss, addiction and isolation.  Ultimately, the songs travel towards self-discovery and redemption, with a sense of hopefulness in hard times.  Check it out.
