The new single from San Francisco-based Chuck Prophet and cumbia band ¿Qiensave? is simply full of beauty.  The rich layers, including stunning guitar and lap steel, are the base from which Prophet finds a delightful vocal melody.  Subtle, intricate rhythms keep the song, and the listener, moving as ‘Red Sky Night’ develops into a quiet epic.  The accompanying video, directed by Lauren Tabak, allows us inside the studio to see Prophet, his band The Mission Express and ¿Qiensave? at work.  It’s a glimpse into the process and camaraderie that results in a song so precisely-arranged and gorgeously-composed as ‘Red Sky Night’ and it’s a privilege to see the creativity and musical talent on display.

The single appears on the collaborative album ‘Wake the Dead’ due on 25th October 2024.  Known for his outstanding work as a singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer, Chuck Prophet is remarkably consistent while also inventive and adventurous.

During his recent serious illness and recovery, Prophet became immersed in the world of cumbia music, a source of comfort and companionship.  Becoming obsessed with the genre, he sought out old vinyl from Latin America and studied its origins.  One of the bands he fell in love with was cumbia urbana group ¿Qiensave? from California and, as he recovered, they enjoyed jamming sessions together and a few well-received shows.  The connection was natural and powerful, leading to recording the new album together along with The Mission Express.  Their time in the studio was dynamic and energetic, with the songs recorded live and full of life.  The resulting songs are diverse compositions that transcend genres.  Prophet’s superb songwriting and the rhythmic dance energy of ¿Qiensave? are an excellent match.  Enjoy.
