Here is the brilliantly moody video, directed by Tim Hardiman, for Robert Finley’s latest single. ‘Holy Ghost Party’ is a timeless song that begins with a quiet, raw character before building towards its great, grooving climax. As it grows, the mix of blues and gospel-tinged sounds, along with funky guitar and wonderful percussion, create a hypnotic, transcendent song. Beautifully angelic call-and-response vocal support is provided by Finley’s daughter, singer Christy Johnson. Producer Dan Auerbach pulls all those flavours together into a spiritual blend with Finley’s voice, warm and soulful, at its heart and the result is totally absorbing.
The single is from Finley’s fourth album for Easy Eye Sound, “Hallelujah! Don’t Let The Devil Fool Ya”, due on 10th October 2025. Supported by a talented group, including Auerbach, guitarist Barrie Cadogan (Little Barrie, Primal Scream, The The) and Malcolm Catto on drums (The Heliocentrics, Madlib, DJ Shadow), the album was improvised and tracked with remarkable speed…this was was all put together in one incredible day. Auerbach explains: “Back in the day when Robert played for tips, he’d ask people questions and improvise songs for them on the spot. That was the method, and that was the way, and choosing that direction – everything improvised, playing, singing and writing off the cuff – sparked a session of divinely inspired creativity, because letting the spirit move him is a trademark of Finley’s creative process.” Divine inspiration indeed.
Finley says of the record: “Making a gospel record was the first thing I ever wanted to do. I’ve had at least one gospel song on each album, and I even did a gospel song on America’s Got Talent. One of the guys said he didn’t know if it was the type of crowd for that, but some of those people were in tears.” Get moving to this and then look out for the full album in October – essential listening.
