Courtney Marie Andrews has released her first song in three years, and it is absolutely beautiful, both musically and thematically. From the perfectly judged opening line: “Don’t make yourself small, baby, take up space,” Andrews inspires with her uplifting words of encouragement and positivity, urging listeners to embrace our true selves and show ourselves to the world. Her distinctive voice, drifting over delicate guitar, is as elegant and melodic as ever, catching tuneful currents and rising up in the choruses.
Andrews says of the single: “‘Cons & Clowns’ is an ode to all the artists, outsiders, and shy loved ones you want to see shine! In this world of growing sameness, I wanted to write a love letter of encouragement to anyone who was afraid to be their wildest and weirdest self, especially amid the dark landscape of now. With a desire to embody the unencumbered playfulness of youth, I played the flute on this track, an instrument I haven’t played since my childhood.” And the sweet flute lends the song a gentle wistfulness that remains with you long after listening.
Directed by Jacq Justice and featuring Creighton Baxter as ‘Bird’, the accompanying video was shot on a road trip along the Californian coast, and it captures a glorious sense of wonder, enhanced by the nostalgic found-footage style.
Although this is Andrews’ first new music since her 2022 album “Loose Future”, she has continued to be creative across different mediums; she has just released her second poetry collection, ‘Love Is a Dog That Bites When It’s Scared’, which tackles the conflicting nature of love and its many layers. A prolific painter, Andrews’s works of art have been shared on social media and featured in gallery showings across the US. With such a range of talents, such imagination and sensitivity, Andrews really is one of the most accomplished artists of our time. Catch her on tour in the UK and Europe this autumn.

Though I live a bit north on the same Pacific Ocean, there is truly something sublime about the California coast. Courtney’s music and visuals are a lovely complement to its magical aura.
