Lucy Kitchen “In My Corner” – lost love

Lucy Kitchen is a British folk singer-songwriter based in Romsey, Hampshire. Her songs explore profound concepts of grief and loss, drawing inspiration from lyrical poets, nature, the seasons and the art of creating beauty out of difficulty. And that has never been more true than on Lucy Kitchen’s latest single ‘In My Corner‘, which is an aching song of grief and a questioning of what to do next, how to go on after a loss. Its quiet poignancy comes out of its reality – Lucy Kitchen’s singing offers a raw, intimate glimpse into the loss of her husband Stephen to cancer, and with him, the quiet strength of her biggest champion.

As she explains: “We used to sit up and have these big life/death chats as we knew he didn’t have long to live at a certain point. I remember one night having a really big one about what I was going to do, and me chucking out all these slightly crazy ideas, and him just saying that he wanted me to really live my life and do whatever I wanted. A lot of this song comes out of that and has become one of my favourite tracks on the album.”

My singing so directly, and with a perfect arrangement around the words, ‘In My Corner‘ resonates with all the conflicted feelings of grief: it’s simply a beautiful song, full of humanity.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
