Track Premiere: Birds Flying Backwards “My Friends”

Today’s Track Premiere is from Bird Flying Backwards, a London based folk-rock ensemble who are building a name for themselves through touring with The Hanging Stars and appearing at storied London venues like MOTH Club and The Shacklewell Arms.  Their sound is very much in a timeless American influenced folk-rock (you might think early Fairport – and why not?), as demonstrated on their new single ‘My Friends‘, which is an emotionally open note to valued friends and an admission that how, despite a deep commitment to each other, they will seemingly inevitably drift apart as the years go by.

Songwriter Joe Russell-Sanders explained his thoughts behind the song’s sentiments: “‘My Friends’ is an ode to friendship. It’s your reminder to tell your friends that you love them, and to cherish the moments you spend together. But it is bittersweet, because these moments don’t last forever. Think about all the friends you’ve lost over the years, people who’ve moved away, ones you’ve fallen out with, grown apart, or become estranged from.  Friendship, now more than ever, is important. We need our friends. And yet, we are more disconnected from them now than we’ve ever been. Nefarious forces work to try to keep us apart – politics, the media, cost of living, disinformation, the list goes on. People are lonely and they are isolated. But, without each other, we are nothing.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
