Here’s the latest single from Seattle singer-songwriter Robert Deeble. Inspired by the graphic novel ‘The Carter Family: Don’t Forget This Song’, which tells the story of the difficult relationship between country music pioneers AP and Sara Carter, ‘Orphan Song’ is deeply atmospheric, benefiting from haunting backing vocals, lilting lap steel and delicate 12-string notes. Extra musical layers come from Sydney Metcalf on cello and Aleida Gehrels on viola, with a string arrangement by Ric Hordinski. Deeble’s voice, heartfelt and characterful, is resonant and warm, particularly when he drops lower in the melody.

This single is taken from Deeble’s new album, “The Space Between Us”, a collection born out of troubled times and conflict. Deeble explains the ideas behind the new record: “‘The Space Between Us’ reflects on the relationships that become frayed in a partisan era and speaks to our deep longing for connection. The album is the result of a four-year partnership with producer Ric Hordinski in Cincinnati, OH, and my string players here in Seattle. Together, we utilised several different studios around the country, with players around the country who contributed. Most of its songs were written, arranged, recorded and produced between 2020 and 2024. The album’s title and theme emerged during the pandemic and throughout a deeply polarising period of American politics. While the songs cover their own individual topics, collectively, they felt to me to be a lament for the relational dysfunction of our time, with also a hope that we may turn from an idolatry of power – potentially to discover a strength in vulnerability.”

With physical versions having already been released for those who supported crowdfunding, the new album, Deeble’s seventh, is due for release on streaming platforms on 6th February 2026. Featured musicians include bassist Viktor Krauss (Allison Krauss, Robert Plant) and Lacey Brown (Damien Jurado) on drums. Deeble explains: “I wanted to make the album available first to the folks that have been with me all along. Then it emerged as a Bandcamp exclusive on vinyl, CD, and download in August. I wanted to honor Bandcamp exclusively because of the way they have honoured independent artists like me.” With sensitive lyricism, Deeble delivers a well-crafted collection of emotive songs. Check it out.
