Awolk “Into The Void” – sometimes the void looks back

Canada’s Awolk has just released Wild Rose, a new six-track EP that introduces the next chapter of the project led by Jesse Thomas. Made with Toronto-based producer and engineer Eli Browning, the record captures a stripped-back studio-band energy.  Today’s song is the EP closer, and at first it seems like a light sounding singer-songwriter meditation on relationships – however there is a deeper motivation for the song which was written after Jesse’s mother suffered a sudden and life-altering illness in 2021. The song, he explains, reflects on facing the unknown and the shared weight families carry in moments of crisis, expressed through lines like “See the road, there it goes. Where it runs, you got no place to lay your head” and “Everything a family falls back on, every oath and every memory.”

At times Into The Void is a little bit Harry Nilsson, and – go with us here – elsewhere has a little bit of an early Midlake feel.  Like really early Bamnan And Slivercork Midlake.  Or, maybe it’s just this writer’s ears.  There’s only one way to find out for sure.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
