My Thoughts Know No Bounds is the second single from Portuguese singer-songwriter Hugo S. Simões. This is Simões’ captivating version of the old German folk song Die Gedanken Sind Frei, which translates literally as “Thoughts are free.” Popularised in the 19th century as an anthem against tyranny and calling for freedom, it has been recorded many times, including in English by the likes of Pete Seeger. However, Simões’ version reimagines the song entirely, with melodic adjustments, an expanded theme and all-new lyrics.
Simply put, My Thoughts Know No Bounds is musically radiant, constructed and performed with timeless elegance. Most striking is Simões’ beautiful voice, which is rich, warm and sonorous, effortlessly flowing along melodic currents and lifted by angelic backing. Violeta Marazuela contributes heavenly harmony vocals while Miguel Madeira and Simões both add delicate flourishes of dulcimer, lending the song an authentic folk feel that transports us both into the past and to the Appalachian Mountains. In the accompanying video, created by Rita Madalena Cabrita, fleeting images and vintage-style footage create a sense of wistful nostalgia.
Originally from the Azores but now based in Lisbon, Simões has learned his musical trade by gigging in the bars and basements of the city, sharing his new songs one at a time. His journey is just beginning, but he’s already had airplay on national public radio in Portugal. We look forward to watching Simões, who is also a poet and writer, continue to explore his natural lyricism alongside reimagining folk traditions.
