We are unusually posting something in the evening so it makes the Mailchimp email for Tuesday – no reason why, ahem. ‘This Land is Your Land’ was of course originally penned by Woody Guthrie in 1940, based on an existing melody, a Carter Family tune called ‘When the World’s on Fire’, in critical response to Irving Berlin’s ‘God Bless America.’ Nice this new version from the Avetts which came out on Friday includes the oft left out verse with the words: “Was a high wall there that tried to stop me, A sign was painted said: Private Property, But on the back side it didn’t say nothing, This land was made for you and me.” Good luck everyone.
