Summertyne Americana festival runs July 21st-23rd

One of the Americana highlights of the year, in the UK at least, is the annual SummerTyne festival which runs – rather appropriately, in the Summer at the prestigious Sage Gateshead.  Three days crammed full of simply the finest music.  It’s a combination of main stage appearances at Sage One and Sage Two and Latelounge gigs featuring upcoming musicians and bands that are destined to be the headliners of the future, as well as the ever popular riverside Jumpin’ Hot Stage.

Amongst the already announced performers are, on Sage One,  the UK’s most successful homegrown country band The Shires,  the hugely exciting prospect of Stax legend William Bell with his band, ably supported by the remarkable, 12 piece Stax Academy Revue.  There’s also a one-off, unique show from award-winning US singer-songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman, who will perform with special guests Callaghan and the SummerTyne Strings.

Meanwhile, Sage Two will have the likes of Jim Lauderdale, who will be playing a double-header with none other than Sam Outlaw. And if that’s not awesome enough for you then what can we say except Chuck Prophet.  Yeah, Chuck Prophet – and it doesn’t get better than that.

The SummerTyne Late Lounge offers the opportunity to hear some of the most exciting new voices in the international Americana arena including Tim Eriksen and the up-and-coming Worry Dolls whilst the Jumpin’ Hot Stage has a mix of country, blues, folk, rockabilly, bluegrass and soul.

And as a taster – well, Chuck Prophet.  Why not?

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
