Coming on-line just a little late for us on Friday. Here’s a song from the new Bob Dylan archive album ‘1970‘, which features outtakes and alternate takes of songs from ‘Self Portrait‘ and ‘New Morning‘ as well as recordings with George Harrison. This song comes from the latter album, but on this first take there’s just the piano that knows exactly what it’s doing – the guitar is tentative, exploring the tune, whilst the backing vocals that were a feature of ‘New Morning‘ are completely absent. Dylan’s voice is smooth, not unlike his ‘Nashville Skyline‘ vocals, the song itself is one of those hidden gems from Dylan’s vast catalogue of song. Tiny painted miniature vignettes, a true weariness – not some contrived comment on life’s so hard and all I want to do is realise a small dream. And given that, that the song is saying exactly that thing is no small feat to achieve.
It sounds great.
