Here is the title track from Lael Neale’s brand new album, ‘Acquainted with Night’. Her beautifully melodious vocal over hypnotic, ethereal Omnichord is absolutely captivating. During the pandemic, Neale moved back to the family farm to help out. She found an old camcorder during her stay and used it to create videos to accompany her new material. Neale says of the end result: “‘Acquainted With Night’ is another homemade video that explores my complex relationship with technology. I am drawn to archaic machines, but that doesn’t mean I want to slip backwards into some idealised past. I’m more interested in stepping out of time entirely.” The lo-fi visual is perfectly in keeping with the dreamy folk-pop world she creates.
Neale’s lyrics are utterly absorbing, dense, poetic and full of deeper purpose: “I know that you know me // as one who was made for the light // but if I could show you // I can unfold to // become acquainted with night,” covering themes of isolation and loss. Check it out – this is rather special. The new album is out now.
