Sad Daddy went out of their way to make their latest album sound as if it had a down-home rustic and raw kind of sound. Melissa Carper, Brian Martin, Joe Sundell, and Rebecca Patek – who are the aforementioned Sad Daddy – took themselves off to a cabin in the woods, and no, they didn’t encounter any zombies. Rather it was there that they cut their third album ‘Way Up in the Hills‘. You might have guessed ‘Way back in the woods‘, but no, it’s ‘Way Up in the Hills‘. Musicians and logic – it’s like oil and water.
Sad Daddy explored using porch stomps, hamboning, and the sounds of insects buzzing and bacon sizzling to create a true to life picking-on-the-porch vibe – and the rawness they were looking for is evident on this song from the album. ‘Charlie Pickle‘ is the band’s concept of someone who just doesn’t care what others think – he’s an an ol’ timer who’s lived it all, seen it all, and done it all and now he just wants to cut loose on a dance floor and let the music take him wherever it’s going to take him. Fair play to him.
Underwhelming.
