Jingle Bells Friday – Hey, looks like the rules changed again…

Just two more weeks to go, and the party season is either well into its swing by now, or alternatively has been cancelled.  Everyone’s making those travel plans, or perhaps alternatively deciding to just stay home.  But Christmas isn’t about parties, or presents or over-indulgence in food.   No, the true meaning of Christmas is making a drunken mistake and hoping that it all pays off.  Leastways, that’s what Amanda Shires hints at on our first track of the week, although she wants the mistletoe to take the rap.  Ain’t happening sister, mistletoe may be toxic but all that means is you can blame it for vomiting and headaches, and that’s not really what’s going on here.

India Ramey is refreshingly honest about her approach to Christmas Cheer, and the emphasis is of course on cheer.  Bills may be piling up, the relatives could be arguing politics and the turkey may be burning but there’s one way to avoid it all: “all I want this year is a cocktail for Christmas.”  Done!

Renee Wahl & The Sworn Secrets are playing with their own version of fire – they know that Santa won’t come until everyone’s asleep, but that’s not stopping their rock and roll party.  This is no silent night…

Of course Christmas doesn’t just happen and sometimes things don’t go to plan: “let me guess you burned the biscuits once again / … / another case of candy-canes ‘cos someone ate them all.”  It’s lucky there’s always somewhere to get those last minute necessities, and Theo & Brenna would like us all to take a moment and remember those who ‘Work on Christmas.’

And finally on this week’s selection we have Drew Cooper, who really would like you – yes you! – to ‘Come Home for Christmas’ – as he explains on this Nashville-Soul recording.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
