Rapid-fire, literate, irreverent, surreal. A cascade of lyrics spills from singer Mathais Kom’s mouth as The Burning Hell blaze through their new single, ‘Birdwatching’. A jubilant indictment of the hustle, the side-hustle, and all the personal and societal destruction that late-capitalism has wrought. Speedy rhyming references to Plato, Water World, The Lord Of The Rings, the Situtationists, and a whole world of self-help clichés are fuel for a Promethean fire (also referenced) that forges a new life from the garbage and debris of the old. The video matches the quick-witted lyrics with found footage, animation, and a pair of dancing binoculars. There is also what is possibly the best one-note guitar solo of the 21st Century so far. You’ll need to watch more than once to soak everything in.
‘Birdwatching’ is the second single from the Canadian band’s new album ‘Bird Queen of Garbage Island’ on BB Island Records. The video was created by Aiden Searle Art and Design Co.
Band members Ariel Sharratt, Jake Nicol, and Darren Brown will be joining Kom on a tour of Canada in April 2022.
