Bruce Springsteen “Faithless” – looking for something to hold onto

Another release from the Springsteen unreleased seven albums set – ‘Faithless‘ has a smoother ‘Nebraska‘ feel to it, with a bit of a Dylan twist as well “I reached for the hem of his garment / I stood in the light of the doorway / I saw my face in the waters at the river side / and it’s a hard, and it’s a hard faithless, faithless.”  And maybe it’s not so surprising at that, as this is the title track of an un-released album that would have come between ‘Devils & Dust‘ and ‘The Seeger Sessions.’  ‘Faithless‘, the album, was meant to be a film soundtrack – only the film was never made.  As Springsteen explains: “This was a really unusual collection of songs.”  All of ‘Faithless‘ was composed before a single frame of the film was shot — over a prolific two weeks in Florida — he says of the results: “You could recognize details and maybe a character or two. But for the most part, I just wrote atmospheric music that I thought would fit.”

Like ‘Nebraska‘, the album was recorded primarily as a solo pursuit, with appearances throughout by producer Ron Aniello, touring members of The E Street Band — Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Curtis King, Jr., Michelle Moore and Ada Dyer — as well as contributions from Patti Scialfa, Evan Springsteen and Sam Springsteen.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
