Classic Clips: Bill Kirchen “Blue Christmas Lights” – Live in Cleveland 2009

YouTube is full of grainy, shaky and barely audible concert footage taken by audience members using inadequate equipment. For the most part ‘Classic Clips’ steers clear of such content. However, from time to time, something will emerge that so captures the essence of an artist, that the limited quality of the clip becomes of lesser importance. For this Christmas edition of ‘Classic Clips’ we feature long time AUK favourite Bill Kirchen performing live in Cleveland back in 2009. What the technical quality lacks is more than made up for by a typically chipper Bill Kirchen performance of a festive country classic. The song was written by Buck Owens and Red Simpson and appeared on Buck Owens’ ‘Christmas with Buck Owens and his Buckeroos’ album released in 1965. Since then it has been covered by a whole host of artists including a great version by Chris Hillman & Herb Pederson and an appearance on Lucinda Williams’ recent Christmas album.

A very happy Christmas to all AUK readers and look out for more great ‘Classic Clips’ chosen by our writers in the new year.
