Here on ‘Classic Clips’ we try to bring you the best and the most interesting clips from out there in videoworld. This week we bring you a rather unlikely trio of performers doing their thing on an unspecified UK TV show in 1987 – maybe one of our readers could enlighten us further? First up we have Dr. Sam Hutt more familiarly known as Hank Wangford, lover and parodier of all things country music. Then there is the legendary folk-rocker Richard Thompson in a rarely captured moment between full barnet and full beret. Lastly, we have another legend in Shetland Island fiddler Aly Bain, perhaps now best known for his regular appearances on The Transatlantic Sessions.
The song covered is ‘I’m S.A.V.E.D.’ by brothers Earl and Bill Bolick who rather than go with the obvious moniker, plumped instead for the name The Blue Sky Boys and had a career spanning some forty years. There are a number of good compilations of their best work available and they are certainly worthy of further investigation if you have a predilection for old time country music (guilty as charged in my own case). Anyway, I digress. Back to the clip which sees Wangford clearly thoroughly enjoying himself, Thompson at first looking slightly perplexed, possibly wondering how the hell he ended up in those trousers, but warming to things as the song travels along God’s highway. Then there’s Aly Bain, who I defy anyone to read. A straighter face you’ll never see – it hasn’t changed in fifty years. I for one, wouldn’t want to play poker with him.
