I was interested to see Andy Short mention this late 80s NME tape in his top 10 of Americana tunes.  It was a huge influence on my listening for the last 40 years.  It introduced me to Lyle Lovett (still my favourite), Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Dwight Yoakam, John Hiatt and others. Does anyone else remember this? There is a playlist on Spotify, well worth a listen.

Thanks Michael, it was a bit before my time (I was more Smash Hits in my teen years) but free compilations are responsible for a lot, I still remember the Uncut ones towards the end of the 1990s which were part of my journey to americana.

I collected, and still have, most of those legendary NME tapes and The Tape With No Name was one of the most influential. If you're canny enough you can find downloads of most of them on that old fangled thing called the internet.

I wasn't cool enough to read the NME back in the day, so just learning about this now, what a great tape...

It had a massive influence on my listening. Eventually I would have stumbled across these new artists but there is Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffiths, John Prine, Emmylou. I could go on. Just wonderful.
