Well - 'er-indoors has come down with an unspeakably horrendous 'stomach thing' on the day when we were due to leave for a weekend away with our dearest friend in respect of his birthday (you'll know him but I won't name him). Said friend is somewhere up North with family, 'er-indoors is in bed looking particularly peaky and I'm left to my own devices. The only thing is to play tunes, have a small gin (small being an advisory term) and populate the Americana-Uk Forums with content as is my wont. Here we go with songs about 'drink' ('Drinking Songs' is a different thing which we can address later). Give me, if you will, three songs which specifically talk about your favourite poison.
I'll start:
I have a completely irrational love for this song. I don't know why - maybe because I remember doing exactly this back in the day. I guess the licensing laws have changed nowadays but this brings back fond memories. Or were they fond? Yeah, probably - the folly of youth...
One of my favourite songwriters of all time the magnificent Ray Davies. This track from another of my "All Time Top Ten Americana Albums" (we can argue the details of that later)
This reminds me of the joke: "I gave up drinking once. The worst twenty four hours of my life"
Over to you...
Here are my three Paul
We can't have a drinking songs thread without a Willy Vlautin song and without a song about a pub crawl so let's kill two birds with one stone which means l still have 2 choices left
Second, this cracker from Pete Gow. I know this video was posted on the site recently but I was lucky enough to receive a signed copy of "Leo" as 50th birthday present so I reckon that justifies a wee bit of plagiarism! One of my go to Saturday night records. Love the Case Hardin albums too.
Finally, this one. Bit of a stretch to describe a song about cancer as a drinking song but who are we to deprive our protagonists of the wee bit of comfort they find in a few drinks watching the weekend crowds.
Hopefully I've mastered the video upload thing but, in case not, the songs are:
Richmond Fontaine, Let's Hit One More Place
Pete Gow, Leonard's Bar
Jason Isbell, Elephant
Have a great weekend folks
Mastered it you have @MarkMcCall. Another good selection. Love that drumming in the Pete Gow track. That guy has a real 'touch'
Interesting facts: Pete Gow used to be a cameraman for the BBC and also used to write for Americana-UK. His drummer in Case Hardin used to be our Interviews Editor - tragically his name escapes me but it might have been Paul. I remember him because (a) he was a lovely bloke and (b) his birthday was the day after mine
My very close friend @CharlieArglist has suggested we have a thread for non-alcohol drinkers. I don't know who these people are but I'm prepared to entertain the idea.
Best line: "I can drink more tea than England" which is a bold assertion. Kudos for that.
"Hallejuah Rosy Lea"
Absolutely fucking brilliant
Well, I don't drink anymore, but I'm pleased to say I don't drink any less either (I can hear the groans from here 😉), so I thought I'd offer up this selection.
The lyrics in this song confused me for quite a while, until someone mentioned that it's about a bottle of Whiskey 😆
Western Centuries - "Off the Shelf"
And does anyone sing about drinking better than Brennen Leigh?
Oops! And my third choice is from an excellent recent album
By the way, how do I post a video to these forums? 😄
Dwight Yoakam likes a good drinking song 'This Drinkin Will Kill Me' classic version at Austin City Limits.

Copy the YouTube link and post it directly - no need to 'link' it
I'm with Shorty, Dwight's the man for a drinking song.
Vernon Wray, with help from his brother Link, in 1972. Clint put me on to his "Wasted Album".
For some reason these three came to mind...maybe I've been thinking about this year's gigs...
I thought you were going to post this one Paul V
On that note, I can't think of any genre as obsssed with drinking as country music. I remember when this song came out I looked at the country top 40 and there were about a dozen songs about booze.
